The 411

-First, my album is featured on Delusions of Adequacy today: http://www.adequacy.net/review.php?reviewID=8696

-You might have heard that I was supposed to tour this past March. Instead, I took a much needed mental health rest, and spent time creating, learning new things, and listening to bhangra and mariachi music instead. I'm playing drums in a new band with some close friends, Mary Djaboury (guitar, vox) and Jason Merriman (bass). We don't have anything to show for it yet, not even a band name, but just you wait!! And don't worry, I will be touring for my solo project with my band in tow, all around the country from August 15th - September 20th.

-I will be making an appearance at UVA as a guest lecturer on May 16th. If you are attending UVA this summer, contact me (info@carolbui.com) for information if you are interested.

-You also might have heard that I was supposed to tour Italy last month with my close friend and colleague, Alina Simone. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it happen due to mysterious- forces beyond our control. But rest assured, Alina and I will get together for some shows later this summer as we both will be touring the US. As for Italy, or anywhere else outside of the US, keep checking back as I might be able to make it happen soon.

See you in August.

Everyone Wore White is out! Order from Insound, iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, etc. If your local record store doesn't have it, tell them to order from Redeye. Some recent press on the album:

'In the tradition of her hometown of Washington, D.C., she's made a punk-bred record where the guitar is loud but the tunes prevail.' - Pitchfork

'Thank you for Everyone Wore White (available Oct. 2 on 54o40' or Fight!), a record that manages to be culturally unique and universal, beautiful and harrowing, frequently within a single song.' -My Old Kentucky Blog

I only play with the pros.

next show: pash's cd release show on friday, august 31st at the black cat main stage in wdc. we open, then pash, then exit clov.

Hey, it's been awhile. There's a lot to report.

I found a terrific label home for the new record! The awesome peeps at 54º 40' or Fight! Records (The Life and Times, 31 Knots, Alina Simone) are releasing it early October. Hell yes.

Oh, btw - I'm calling it Everyone Wore White. Here's the tracklisting:

1. 1
2. modern dance
3. eol
4. quan am
5. call from bangkok
6. the year after
7. 2
8. hypnagogia
9. rockville
10. st. elizabeth's
11. qua cau gio bay (vietnamese traditional)

Head on over to MySpace to preview some tracks!

My band and I will be touring extensively this fall to support this release. Check back regularly for updates.

If you're in the DC area this July, you should come see us at Fort Reno. We're playing with Beauty Pill and The Alphabetical Order on the 19th. I'm also playing at DC9 on July 3rd with the lovely Alina Simone.

3/4/2007

Hey, everyone. I just updated the shows page with the latest tour information. Yes, my band is travelling with me. Meagan's rockin' the bass again. My friend Dylan Thurston, who I toured with in The Physics of Meaning a little while ago, is on drums. Dylan is a super busy guy, so I'm lucky to have him - he plays drums for Eyes to Space, David Karsten Daniels (Fat Cat), plus a handful of other NC triangle-based acts. He's a hot commodity.

pssssssss...visit my myspace page for a sneak preview of the new record.

See ya on the road!!

~ Carol

2/5/2007

I know it's been awhile, but I have a good excuse for the lack of communication. I've been super busy with the record...and guess what? We're done!! Chad and I finished mixing late last week. All that's left now is mastering...and label support. I've never been so proud of anything I've done before, ever. So that's that.

I am touring with my band again next month. This time we're heading to Texas and back, with several dates supporting aggro-shoegazers Panda and Angel (Jade Tree). Check out my MySpace for the most up-to-date information. Our first show together is a local one: March 8th at Murky Upstairs in Arlington, VA. See ya then.

I'm happy to announce that Steve Brydges over at 43 Rocket (Victory at Sea, Panda & Angels, The Eternals, etc) will be handling all tour booking. All inquiries should be directed to steve at 43rocket dot com.

been writing, recording, rehearsing, booking, myspacing, hunting for a label home, taking 'body jam' classes and...working.  listening to a lot of alina simone, kate bush and aloha still.  those three will remain in my car stereo for a long, long time.  lately I've been dancing to the new beyonce cd a lot.  "get me bodied" and "sugar mama" are fucking awesome.

I turned 25 late last month.  my birthday was spent making music at inner ear. best birthday ever.  my baby brother wrote me a poem about how I'm now a quarter of a century old and am running out of time.  aw, how sweet.

we're taking our time with this record, but it's worth the wait.  trust me on this.  the music is ... mathy-angular noise-rock?  art-pop?  traditional vietnamese?  zeppelin-esque blues-rock?  torch-singer balladry? prog???

the songs are mostly about my family.  embarassingly personal stuff, even more so than TIHIR, but I don't know how to write any other way just yet.   are you intrigued?  you should be.

I'm hoping to find a way to release the new record winter/spring of 2007.

my tourdates have been updated.  a good handful of shows are with decibully (myspace.com/decibully).  their latest record on polyvinyl is super catchy and super awesome.  you should buy it and make your friends buy it too.

wow, am I a great saleswoman or what??

Update

We started recording at Inner Ear earlier this month. It's going great so far; these new songs are more ambitious than anything I've ever written...AND...my family is growing! In addition to the always fabulous Marc Taylor and Ian Wright, TJ Lipple (Aloha) is contributing on drums/percussion and Martin Brummeler on bass. Daniel Hart (The Physics of Meaning, ex-Polyphonic Spree) and Jenny Petrow are making cameo appearances on violin and cello, respectively. Because of these wonderful peeps, this record will kick ass, I assure you.

We've got a couple shows coming up this summer: July 11th at the Black Cat in WDC and August 20th at The Knitting Factory in NYC. See you!

Back From Tour :: Recording :: More Press :: Radio and Blogs

Phew, I'm back from an action-packed east coast excursion. Thanks to everyone who came to a show, let me crash at their house, bought a cd or helped me put the tour together.

Some of you might have heard about the car accident that occurred in NYC, halfway through my tour; this kid wrecked my car while it was parked on Houston St. and I've been dealing with annoying NYPD/insurance/transportation crap since. It's been especially irritating because my insurance policy doesn't include collision. I'm still running around without a car, but thankfully, that will change this weekend.

ANYWAY, I want to give a special shout out to the beautiful and talented Alina Simone for not only touring with me, but for letting me use her Prius for the shows I played without her. If it weren't for Alina, I would not have been able to complete the tour in its entirety. THANK YOU, ALINA!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!

There are a few summer shows on the horizon, but most of my time will be spent writing and recording my next full length. Expect an early 2007 release date via god knows what label. Yes, very exciting news indeed.

More positive reviews and blurbs have been posted, including ones from Popmatters, DCist and Washington Post. Bloggers (Largehearted Boy, Mystery and Misery, etc) and djs are posting/playing songs from TIHIR. Check out 3WK, Girlie So Groovie, WRIR, Mansion on the Hill, and so on. Just google me, ok?

~ Carol

A couple of the april shows have been moved around. Buffalo on April 10th was cancelled, and the Brooklyn show at Goodbye Blue Monday has been rescheduled from the 11th to the 10th. Check here for details. I better see at least some of you at my shows!!

I'm pleased to announce that the fabulous Alina Simone will join me in several cities, including Brooklyn, York, College Park, and Harrisonburg. This weekend will be spent in Raleigh, NC and Charlottesville, VA with the amazing Daniel Hart and The Physics of Meaning. Awesome.

Spring 2006 will be a great season, I know it. Summer might be even better, since I'll be in the studio cranking out some new songs with Chad & TJ. I can't wait.

April Tour Dates

...have been posted. I still need help with the following areas: Buffalo/Rochester/Ithaca/Brooklyn, NY, CT, MA for April 9-11th and Norfolk/Charlottesville/Williamsburg, VA, DE, MD for April 17-19th. I will cherish you forever if you either help me get a show or let me sleep on your floor.

Summer Recording Plans

I am psyched out of my mind because the sexy boys of Silver Sonya are producing and engineering the next Carol Bui record this coming July. Marc and Ian will both join me again in the studio on drums and bass, respectively. How and when it will be released is TBD. Stay tuned!

Press

More positive reviews of TIHIR have been published, but I'm too beat right now to post them. Come back in a few.

On Tap: Drunken Butterfly Records

Korin Miller of On Tap said some pretty nice things about us. Read her piece here.

Back From Tour.

My two week excursion with The Physics of Meaning was nothing short of amazing. Special thanks to Daniel Hart for inviting me to be a part of the TPOM family. If you don't already own the new self-titled record, go to Buhananrecords.com NOW and treat yourself to a copy. North Carolinians note: I will reunite with Daniel et al next month for a show on December 17th, on guitar for TPOM as well as for...well, the Carol Bui band. Pattern is Movement (who will rule the world some day) and Aimee (Des _Ark) will be joining us that night.

What's Next

Writing, writing, writing...winter/spring tour. I have tentative plans to tour again in early 2006. If you want us to come to your town, get in touch. Tour personnel is TBD.

With help from Marc and Ian, I'm also generating ideas and songs for the next full length, with plans to record in the spring or summer. How it will be released is to be determined...keep your eyes and ears open. You can check out one of our new demo recordings from this past June on MySpace.

The Physics of Meaning

From October 23rd to November 4th, I will be filling in on guitar for The Physics of Meaning on the east coast leg of their tour. Back in June, I was fortunate enough to play on a couple tracks of their upcoming cd, which is slated for release in November via Buhanan Records. I swear to you the songs are crazy beautiful and Daniel Hart is an insanely talented violinist & songwriter. Keep checking here for the latest tour information. Awww, yeah.

Ladyfest NC

In Carol Bui news, we will be playing North Carolina's installment of Ladyfest this year. Keep checking back for updates.

Home.

Our tour was a great success, thanks to those who supported us by either setting up/playing/coming to a show, buying cds or letting us crash on your couch.

I will be touring again at the end of November, and playing some east coast dates with the lovely Alina Simone. Unfortunately, Marc and Ian won't be coming along this time but will continue to rock with me locally. I've enlisted my good friend, Ben Reynolds, to loudly bang on things in their stead while I play guitar and sing on this tour. He's very good at it, one of the best I've ever worked with...I'm psyched to have him join me on the road this fall. Contact me if you want us in your town!

More radio

Last year, we had the pleasure of playing one of the stops on Jenny Choi/Sanawan's AIR tour. Her drummer, Philip Stone, is a host for Donkey Punch Radio. I highly recommend it to everyone because not only is Philip a charming and funny guy with good taste, but also because This Is How I Recover is on this week's show. Check it out now; the show will be up only until this Sunday night.

The song was also played yesterday on Imaginasian Radio. The show will be available for streaming from their website starting this Thursday, March 10th.

Next performance: March 21st at The Black Cat.

~ Carol

2/24/2005

You turn me on, I'm a radio!

For those of you in San Francisco, you might have heard "A Virgin's Anthem" radio debut last Sunday on KSQQ 96.1 FM. You can also stream in the show at Imaginasian Radio.

We're also excited about "Untitled #2" being on the soundtrack of Mike Kang's new film. It's called "The Motel" and was the official selection for the American Spectrum Section of this year's Sundance Film Festival. Cool!!

Spring/Summer Tours

I'm getting ready to plan not one, but two tours. For my week long, plugged solo tour (a la Jeff Buckley, Live at the Sine, as Frank of Verbal puts it) of the west coast in May/June, I'm looking for contacts, bands, and venues in the following metro areas (in no particular order):

Seattle, WA
Olympia, WA
Portland, OR
Eugene, OR
San Francisco, CA
Los Angelos, CA

For the full band tour in July/August, we're looking at the following cities/metro areas:

Chicago, IL
Champaign, IL
Detroit, MI
Toledo, OH
Manhattan, NYC
Brooklyn, NYC
Buffalo, NY
Atlanta, GA
Savannah, GA
Nashville, TN
Columbia, SC
Richmond, VA
Durham/Chapel Hill, NC
Harrisonburg, VA
Nawlins, LA
Boston, MA

We'd appreciate ANY kind of help anyone can give us, just shoot me an email. Also, let me know if you want us to come to a town that's not listed above!

So, yeah...the newly refurbished record is available for sale now. You can listen to mp3s and order online, but the best and cheapest way to purchase is at a show. I'm so sneaky! You may also purchase the cd at Revolution Records in Washington, DC and through other channels TBA.

Special thank yous to: Jason Merriman, TJ Lipple/Jason Caddell/Chad Clark @Silver Sonya, Amy Shapiro, my band, and everyone else involved with the project. They're the bestest of the best and I am MORE than happy with all of their work.

I've changed the look and feel of the website. Let me know if anything is broken. Plus, more pictures have been posted.

Next show: February 21st @DC9. Have a great New Year! I know I will.

~ Carol

Grant of Indieworkshop.com had some nice words to say about my record. Read the review here.

Jason is almost done with the new mixes, which will be heading to Chad Clark/TJ Lipple at Silver Sonya for mastering in a couple weeks. I'm hoping cds will available by the Carol Bui/Princessed/Del Cielo show on December 21st at Black Cat.

Happy friday!!

~ Carol

10/11/2004

I Don't Call Him By Name is on a new compilation by Red Stapler Records. There will be a release party for the CD, entitled TPS Reports Vol. 1, at IOTA on October 19th. Six great bands, including our friends Gist, will be playing that night. You do not want to miss this show.

This is How I Recover is currently being remixed by my good friend Jason Merriman of the Hurricane Lamps. It'll be a complete reissue with new artwork by Bunny Shapiro (Princessed, Loom of Maya, the Kissing Contest). Any orders placed after today won't be shipped until late November, when the new and improved record is scheduled for release.

Next show: October 25th at DC9 with Meredith Bragg and the prayers and tears of arthur digby sellers.

~ Carol

8/24/2004

I'm reissuing This is How I Recover sometime this fall, probably in October or November. The record will be remixed/remastered/repressed. Keep yr ears open...

The Princessed reunion show was awesome; it felt so good for us to play together again. Too bad we're scattered all over the country. Del Cielo was amazing...what a great night. It was so great that Greg Ceton wrote a little something on us for the city paper. Read it here.

Please check out Go Machine of Chapel Hill, NC. We played a show with them this past weekend at Galaxy Hut; they are sooooo my new favorite band. They've inspired me to abandon my beautiful telecaster for a theremin. ;-)

Don't forget to check the shows page for recent updates. New pictures of Princessed and Carol Bui coming soon.

Upcoming shows: this Friday at Brighton Bar in Long Branch, NJ then Saturday at Pianos in NYC.

~ Carol

7/27/2004

Are ya comin' my way, baby?

Tune in to WAMU's "Metro Connection" on 88.5 FM Friday between 1 and 2pm to hear Mark Jenkin's review of This is How I Recover! After it airs, the piece will be available for streaming on www.wamu.org.

By the way, the Black Cat show was a whole lotta fun. The guys of Gist were awesome as usual, not only because they played good stuff but they let us use a bunch of their gear.

Next show: July 23rd at Staccato with Alex Eliopoulis of Psychic Twin.

~ Carol

7/2/2004

More show dates added including one on July 23rd @Staccato with Psychic Twin. Psychic Twin are cool because Alex Eliopoulos is in the band...and Alex is cool because he and I played together in a band called The Precious Few waaaay back in '98 - '99, pre-Princessed. They're cool for other reasons too; check them out here. Visit the shows page for more details on the event.

The next night, July 24th, we are playing at The Fire in Philly, with EQ2, Dakota, and Johnny Action Star.

Next show: July 6th at the Black Cat w/Gist. They're working on a new record and let me tell ya...their stuff rocks. Come out Tuesday night to hear for yourself.

~ Carol

6/28/2004

Sorry it's been so long. The CD release party was a whole lotta fun...if you missed it then well, you missed it. Thanks to all who came out to see us, when you could have gone across the street to see Beastie Boys! Also, thanks to the wonderful guys of Verbal for playing the show with us.

Make sure you check the calendar for a complete listing of shows. I've added a couple new ones recently so make sure you're up to date on future Carol Bui appearances!

Next show: This friday at The Vault Club, Baltimore, MD. And if Baltimore is too far for you, we'll be at the Black Cat with Gist next week on July 6th. Check here for details.

I don't know why it took me so long but I've finally put up biographical info on my band members. I love them to death...you can see why by going here.

Next show: April 28th at GMU w/ExitClov. It's an APA Heritage month event...gotta celebrate our asian-ness. Hope to see you there! And if I don't, you have many other chances to experience the, um, Carol Bui experience as we are prepping for other DC area shows plus a summer east coast tour. More tour information to come.

Check out upcoming shows for April and May. It's official - we will be playing the first ever Asian Rock Fest at Piano's in NYC on May 22nd. How exciting is that! This won't be no violin or piano recital either...

This is How I Recover is available for sale. It will soon be available in select DC area record stores but if you want it now you can go here.

The record, entitled This is How I Recover, is being mastered by Jim DeMain as I type. I'm hoping to start selling copies here on this website by the end of next week. So exciting!

Notice the new graphics? I finally gave up and did the Photoshop-ing for this site myself because no one else has the time to do it for me for...free... Photos were taken by the great Karen Malczak, who's also doing the cd art for This is How I Recover. Logo type by my s.o. Cammy Lonesome. I promise I will have band bios and pics soon.

Again, check out the shows page for upcoming gigs in the DC area. Hope to see you at one!

New show confirmed - Galaxy Hut on March 21st with the full band. I don't think I'll ever play full sets alone anymore by the way. Stay tuned...more details and shows to come.

I know this is redundant, but I want to remind you all that the new album will be ready for release by the end of February. We're in the mixing stage right now. I keep mentioning it because I really can't wait for everyone to hear it...again, it will include old stuff from the Inner Ear session plus 7 new songs. All recorded (or re-recorded) with my new band.

PLUS, and this is really exciting, some Carol Bui remixes. Why not, right? More info later.

Band pics and bios will be here shortly. School just started up again so please bear with me.

OK...we are DONE recording. We are now in the mixing stage. I'm incredibly excited about this record...tons of thank yous to Marcus, Marc, Ian, and Jason! I expect the new record to be ready for release by the end of February.

I'll put up the track listing (12 songs) next week...after I decide on the song order.

Keep checking for more updates!

If you're not doing anything tomorrow night come out to the Firehouse Grill in Fairfax, VA. I'm playing a short 20-25 minute set for open mic with Marc and Ian. Marc's other band, Death Meets Time, will be there too. So come hang out and see us!

We are closer to being done with the new record...I expect it to be ready by the end of February. New songs, new band...I'm very excited!

Keep checking back for more updates and shows. Soon to come: band pics and bios.

Just so you know I'm not sitting around doing *nothing* I am in the middle of re-recording all the inner ear stuff, along with some new material, with my new band. It's been a slow process because of school, work, broken extremities (silly Marc) etc but we're getting there. Current expected wait time: 2.0 months.

Soon to come - pics, band bios and graphics...as soon as I find someone to lend me their graphic design skills since I have none.

There will be more exciting news once this busy holiday season is over. Shows, new releases, etc. I promise. I will try to post something up every week so keep checking back for updates!

Well...my site is now officially complete. I still plan to add more graphics but it is now fully functional. Nothing is broken anymore.

I've added a form on the contact page so you can submit a comment right then and there i.e. you don't have to do it through your email account. So if anyone has comments please share.

If you missed the show Sunday night at Velvet Lounge, shame on you! Better see you next time...
